Contemporary Art of the Pacific Northwest

Totem Poles are monuments created by the indigenous people of the Pacific Northwest that represent historical people, events and ancestry. They depict symbolic and stylized human and animal forms. They can be made to represent important community members and document important events.

“Protector is the whale saving a child caught in a storm when the child’s canoe capsizes and the whale brings the child safely ashore. Protector is the reminder of us as indigenous people protecting our youth and culture so that future generations will prosper.” - Maynard

Veregge was a contemporary artist who depicted pop culture characters with the traditional form-line style. He is known for his art of Marvel, DC, and Star Trek characters.

Salish blankets were highly visible in ceremony and in daily life. The blankets of Salish chiefs were part of the regalia that denoted a person’s rank, social status , and family networks.

The most well-known items are beautifully designed and executed in the abstract form-line style practiced by northern groups, such as the Haida, Tsimshian, and Heiltsuk. Bill Holm, an art historian, famously formally analyzed their artwork in 1965. The style was consistent throughout the region.

The creature has the face of the Barn Owl with Silk Moth feelers. The creature has the legs of the Silk Moth and horns of the Antelope Garna.
